This fourth dimension we visited CyDesignation, the company that deals with the character design for Foursquare Enix NieR:Automata and Cygames Granblue Fantasy and Rage of Bahamut. Moreover, we had the chance to ask character designer Yuya Nagai near his job!

▲In the 2nd half of the commodity you can cheque out a making-of picture show (originally a process of about 1.5h) by Nagai!

What if I suck at drawing!? What CyDesignation looks for in its employees

▲At CyDesignation there are no floor lights. In guild to proceed the LCD tablet screens gratis of annoying reflections, the only lights are placed on the side of the desks, horizontally. We visited the company during the day, just it surely looked like late an night!

-- Could yous tell u.s. something about CyDesignation?

In a nutshell, we're a 2D concept artist group. Our visitor CEO, as well as all the executives, are in the first identify artists and illustrators. I wanted to be contained, and Cygames allowed united states of america to prepare this visitor.

We work as concept artists and illustrators both for Cygames titles and for other companies.

-- What's CyDesignation'due south almost representative title?

-- Did y'all work with other companies except Cygames and Square Enix?

We have. Nosotros're often misunderstood for a Cygames branch, but in reality we're a totally different company.
Surprisingly plenty, in 2013 nosotros worked on a piece of concept art for Ise Shrine official website, in occasion of its 62nd anniversary. Hideo Minaba was in charge of information technology.

-- You're too working for companies that are totally unrelated to video games! Permit me ask y'all about yourself. How did y'all get a part of CyDesignation?

After leaving my previous chore I worked as a freelancer for nearly one year. Honestly, I was thoroughly convinced that I wasn't meant to be an illustrator. Just when I decided to pursue a career in character blueprint, 1 of my friends who was working at CyDesignation invited me to take an interview.

▲ On Nagai's desk we noticed a Croquis sketchbook which, of class, was total of beautiful drafts. He told us he likes design way more than than drawing illustrations.

In our company, yous don't need to exist an ace at drawing - you just need to have good taste when it comes to design. I'm non a skilled illustrator, and so they hired me for my inclination for design.

-- If y'all're not a skilled illustrator, nosotros can but imagine the level of other artists effectually here!

Oh, that'south non true at all. Akihiko Yoshida himself never misses a chance to point out that my drawings are quite poorly balanced. Simply it's okay, as long every bit I have good taste.

▲ These are some of the manga that Yoshida lent to Nagai. Even if it looks like a strict work environment, it still seems quite fun!

The pros and cons of being an employee

-- We'd like to enquire you virtually your work environment. What software are y'all using?

Mainly Painter. However I'm the simply one to utilise this particular software in my company - everyone else is using Photoshop or SAI.

-- Why did you choose Painter?

When I first started drawing digital illustrations, I was aspiring to become as skilled as Katsuya Terada. I heard that he was using Painter, and then I imitated him.

Yet, it'southward non like I'm using it for a particular reason right now... I only don't know how to use other software. My brushes are always in default mode too.

In the most recent software at that place are many convenient functions, and piece of cake way to recreate beautiful furnishings. I wish someone younger than me would teach me how to employ them!

▲Nosotros took a look at Nagai's PC. It's an Intel Xeon E5-2665 2.4GHz, 32GB. The screen on the right is the one he uses to piece of work, while the screen on the left is for resources, groundwork music or even international tv series!

-- It's impressive that yous tin practice what you do without even changing the castor settings.

Working in a company as an employee must be pretty unlike from working freelance. What are the pros and cons of working in a company?

The supreme pro for me is that I don't have to file a revenue enhancement render! (laughs)

Plus, we take health insurance and various welfare benefits. Another advantage is having so many people around to teach you useful skills - information technology's easier to get better this way rather than to practice everything on my ain.

About the cons.... Ah! It always takes time to commute. I wish I could teleport from the company to my home... But aye, that'southward about it.

-- Interesting! Working a freelancer sounds similar a very flexible task, simply working for a company has its merits too.

Exactly. Something I would recommend to all newly graduate students is to endeavor to work in a company earlier starting out as a freelancer. You'll have the hazard to learn teamwork and you'll be able to utilize the connections y'all created for your future job as a freelancer.

What are the main points near character design?

-- Please tell us most your job. First of all, what route should aspiring character designers follow?

When you piece of work as a freelancer, even if you might receive many illustration task offers, character blueprint jobs tend to be quite scarce. That's why I would recommend entering a video game visitor and to brush upwards your ain way of design. Whatever the case, I have a feeling it might be difficult to go the main character designer for a projection straight away.

-- I think young people might have trouble finding their own fashion. What would y'all recommend them to do?

Don't attempt to create something original at all costs. In order to create a character that the world will love, you'll have to use some fixed elements. However, even if merely one of those elements reflects what you lot similar... That'south simply perfect.
Also, I call up that it is better not to compare yourself with others. Yous'll terminate up getting stressed and ill. Don't care nigh others, develop your ain way and treasure it!

▲ We spotted Nagai's favorite figures on his desk. Apparently, he loves the Silent Hill serial and its blueprint.

-- What is the best style to study in club to become a character designer?

I think it's important to accept a look at unlike things in society to broaden your range of design. For example, if y'all have merely seen anime until now, yous may want to spotter live-action movies or overseas dramas. To strop your sense, it might be useful to have an involvement in mode too. Effort to get passionate almost different things, fifty-fifty if your cognition about them is shallow. If yous stick to only ane genre, you'll end up becoming a flat character designer.

▲Nagai'due south go-to BGM(?) are international Television receiver series. He's a huge fan of <em>CSI</em>: Crime Scene Investigation and he keeps many DVDs in his drawer!

-- What are the main points when y'all work on a character'due south design?

I don't start from the lineart; I direct paint my character with colors to decide on the perfect silhouette. Once 'g done with colors, I draw the lineart right on meridian.

When starting from a lineart on a white sheet, it is difficult to sympathize the weight and shape of the objects. And then I would strongly recommend to outset from the silhouette first.

About the design for NieR:Automata

-- Last but non least, nosotros'd similar to inquire you about NieR:Automata. You lot accept worked on several characters, such as the commander of the YoRHa troops, Adam and Eve and Anemone. Would you mind telling us something nigh it? Is in that location anything you institute hard?

▲ The commander of the YoRHa troops

Working for NieR:Automata was a pretty smooth job. I was the i to ask the client if everything was expert, for the most office.

However, but the robots character called Pascal has been repainted many times. I similar loftier-tech mechanics, but I had never drawn retro robots earlier, and that's why Mr. Yoshida'southward retake was amazing. I call back he stock-still it virtually xx times.

-- Did you receive precise indications on how to blueprint the characters?

Not really. For Adan and Eve, all I got was "leather trousers & shirts", "long hair and short hair" and "silver hair". Information technology would have been difficult to create a memorable graphic symbol with only leather pants and a shirt, and so I added some fish scales and other details to brand them look stronger and more than mischievous.
I wasn't forced to give them tattoos, and then I created different patterns: no tattoos, only on their arms, just on the upper part of their body and so on. Those who played this game probably noticed, merely you know how Eve'southward tattoos go bigger and bigger? That'south to show all parts of my pattern in a limited space.

▲ Tattoos expanding are a technique to prove Nagai'due south skillful design!?

-- Please tell united states of america what you focused on when designing the characters for NieR:Automata!

I wanted to make the commander similar to 2B, so I decided to make her but equally voluptuous.

For Adam and Eve I aimed to a blueprint that might appeal to girls. I wanted to make those characters attractive for girls!(laughs)
I gave Anemone a bones face. I thought once all the characters were finished there was the hazard that they would cease upwards very similar. Still, since the photographic camera doesn't get besides shut, it's quite hard to sympathise from a distance.

▲Nagai worked with the character blueprint for NieR:Automata. This illustration was painted afterward work, obviously! Information technology was as well posted on Nagai's Twitter

-- Non being able to see a closeup of your characters in-game is such a waste!

In that case, you lot should probably check outNieR:Automata Globe Guide Bijutsu Kiroku-shū <Haikyotoshi Chōsa Hōkoku-sho> and likewiseNieR:Automata Strategy Guide Kōryaku Settei Shiryōshū《Dai 243-ji Kōka Sakusen Shirei-sho》.

▲This is the encompass of NieR:Automata Earth Guide Bijutsu Kiroku-shū &lt;Haikyotoshi Chōsa Hōkoku-sho&gt;, an artbook published on February. 23rd 2017, together with the game. The strategy guide is going to be on sale from Apr 28th.

▲ This is the NieR:Automata themed illustration that Nagai painted in about i.5 hours. It portrays Adam and Eve. Yous tin can check out the making-of motion-picture show beneath!

If y'all want your dreams to come true, you should continue many roads open!

Nagai is a passionate character designer that focuses on his task from early morning time until night. he told us almost how lucky he was to find a company that was just right for him.

Being an employee helped to make his dreams come truthful, and dedicating himself to something different than existence a freelancer immune him to learn many new things and to brand uncountable new experiences. If you're aiming to become a creator in the hereafter, it might exist good to try working for a visitor before starting your career every bit a freelancer.

#DESKWATCH checks out the inspiring desks of creators, and observes as they strive to deliver the best quality work.

Well so, till next time!
